Our Approach

At SBHSN (School-Based Healthcare Solutions Network), we believe every child—regardless of zip code—deserves access to quality mental health care directly on their school campus. Our approach is rooted in equity, impact, and sustainability.

Why We Fund School-Based Mental Health

Millions of students face behavioral and emotional challenges that impact their academic success and well-being. Yet access to care remains limited—especially in under-resourced schools. We fund mental health programs that bring licensed professionals directly into schools, removing barriers and creating safe, accessible care environments for students who need it most.

How We Select Grantees

SBHSN operates a competitive grant process open to public and public charter schools serving students in grades 6–12. Our

Grant Review Committee—made up of education, healthcare, and legal experts—reviews applications based on:

  • Demonstrated need (absenteeism, behavioral concerns, underserved populations)

  • School leadership commitment

  • Capacity to integrate and support on-campus mental health services

  • Potential for measurable student impact

We prioritize schools in rural and urban communities that often lack adequate behavioral health infrastructure.

What Grantees Receive

Approved schools receive:

  • A fully funded, licensed mental health professional placed on campus

  • Up to $25,000 in discretionary funding over five years to support student-focused initiatives

  • Ongoing support, training, and performance coaching through SBHSN

  • Data tools to monitor student progress and program outcomes

What We Expect from Partners

We look for schools that are ready to champion student mental health. This includes:

  • Providing space and administrative support for the mental health provider

  • Collaborating on outreach to students and families

  • Participating in periodic progress reviews and outcome reporting

  • Sharing in our belief that healthy students are better learners

How We Measure Success

SBHSN tracks outcomes such as:

  • Reductions in chronic absenteeism

  • Fewer behavioral referrals and suspensions

  • Improved academic performance

  • Increased access to timely mental health interventions

We also monitor provider satisfaction, student engagement, and overall school climate improvements.

Our Commitment to Equity and Access

SBHSN is committed to dismantling structural barriers that prevent children from receiving the care they need. We fund programs with an equity lens—prioritizing communities historically marginalized in healthcare and education. We stand with school leaders, counselors, families, and educators in building a more inclusive future for student health.

Real Impact: Stories from the Field

“Before SBHSN, we didn’t have any mental health services on campus. Now our students have a safe space and someone they can trust. It’s changed our entire school culture.”
